The movement for Open Educational Resources is gaining momentum: but is Wikiversity up to meeting this challenge?
Wikis have a great educational potential, but in general this does not seem to be happening on Wikiversity. Compare it with Wikieducator: although the activity there is limited to one or two regions in the world, it has already developed a broader and more coherent range of resources. For example, Wikimaster offers a skills development and certification framework for people developing Wiki courses. As the medium is identical to that used on Wikiversity, is there a way that these two projects could be drawn together? Let's start by looking at what that would mean for their stakeholders.
Beyond that, already there are those who quite frankly dismiss Wikiversity as being completely dysfunctional - sometimes even some sort of Phantom Zone where editors banned from other projects can roam and menace each other. We will also discuss this perspective and the differential impact it has on different language communities.
Last, but not least, we will go over ongoing efforts to change this scenario: the integration of Wikiversity into Wikimedia outreach efforts, both as an intermediate offer for education institutions who want to use Wikipedia but are not quite ready, and as a wiki space that, unlike Wikipedia, can be more deeply integrated into the daily life of both academia and schools; and cases of restructuring the process, presentation or organization of Wikiversity that have been implemented or discussed, successful or not, in different language communities.
