Social media and social networking sites have become pivotal to many Internet users; they are a very powerful tool to spread messages and engage in discussions. Although they haven't coordinated much so far, actors of the Wikimedia movement, like the Wikimedia Foundation and a number of Chapters, have successfully been using social media channels, for example to encourage people to edit, share news, and invite people to local events
The goal of this panel is share experience on the use of social media throughout the Wikimedia movement, and to share best practices to collectively improve our use of these communication channels.
Through the panel, apart from experience sharing, we will also discuss the following topics:
  • How to encourage participation of the rest of the community in the activity of the main social media accounts, currently run by the WMF's social media team;
  • How to curate the channels so others can use them;
  • How to align the dozens of Wikipedia (or other projects)-focused social media accounts for greater impact and awareness;
  • How to meaningfully use one channel to work in dozens of languages and cultures.
