The wiki movement and has erased a top-down-only approach and allowed communities to thrive and dictate the availability and access to real-time information. The growth of the internet and ease of which collective knowledge can be captured and distributed serves as not only the model, but a reminder of the original conception of the internet as a tool for democratizing information. Under threat from SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, and the highly uncompetitive telecommunications market (at least in the U.S.), how can control of internet access and content be placed back into the hands of citizens? Protests against SOPA, PIPA and ACTA demonstrated that grassroots organizing is effective, but the other factors are converging to support a tipping point in setting the agenda for future of the internet. Examples include: steadily increasing internet penetration around the world with heightened reliance and appreciation of information sharing; growing consumer discontent regarding increasingly monopolistic/oligopolistic ISP market where service (upstream/downstream speed, data caps) is deemed "limiting" and expensive; burgeoning interest in collaborative systems and collective consumption, and public (U.N.) support behind expanding broadband internet access.
