Abstract (at least 300 words to describe your proposal)

Over the last several years, a wide range of GLAM institutions have instituted Wikipedian in Residence programs in order to help the host institution better understand the Wikipedia community and to lay the foundation for a more lasting partnership between the Wikipedia community and a cultural institution. Although the Wikipedian community and host institutions may share much in terms of wanting broadly disseminate knowledge and information, differing cultural and domain perspectives may introduce tension, which can be resolved through mutual understanding. This session will focus on lessons learned from both sides of a Wikipedian in Residence partnership. Presenters from host institutions will talk about lessons learned and surprises and insight gained, as well as challenges faced while working with Wikipedians; current and former Wikipedians in Residence will discuss problems and successes in their positions.

If there is interest in this panel, we believe we can attract both current and former WIRs as well as those who have worked with the WIRs at the host institutions. We would encourage speakers to be frank and honest in sharing their perspectives, in order to facilitate a productive and informative discussion.
