An open community of practice is designing a Digital Public Library of America, intended to be a free public library that anyone can help annotate, curate, or contribute to. We will describe the activities of the project, and how it compares with Europeana. We will also describe the development of the project, its focus on a broad national partnership of all library lovers, its collaborative spaces and their wiki nature.

The presentation will touch on the technical, legal and social development of the DPLA platform, the broad coalition of developers and GLAM institutions making it possible, and the services planned as part of DPLA, including a proposed global wiki (WikiCite) for tracking bibliographic citations and possible integration with Wikidata. I will leave half the time for discussion: DPLA is meant to be for you, too, whatever institution or archive you are part of; and feedback and input this year will help make it better.
