Wikimedia Fellowships on Meta

Abstract (please use no less than 300 words to describe your proposal)

This panel will bring together the 2012 Wikimedia Fellows to discuss recent projects focused on usability and community building. We'll feature brief overviews by each fellow about their projects, followed by a group discussion of what it's like to be a Wikimedia fellow, and a Q&A period with the audience.

Fellowship projects being highlighted include:

  • Teahouse, a space piloted on English Wikipedia that is designed to introduce new editors to Wikipedia in a friendly, engaging environment oriented around peer-support, social learning, and online community-building. Panelists will discuss the creation of the Teahouse, present results from the pilot period, and share ideas and implications from lessons learned here for other projects.
  • Translation coordination and translation community building for the annual fundraiser and the meta requests system. Panelists will present what is new in volunteer translations for Wikimedia and share lessons learned from these projects.
  • Help pages redesign, a project that is taking a data-driven approach to improving help documentation on English Wikipedia. Panelist will discuss what's been learned so far, where the project will go from here, and how you can get involved.
  • Dispute Resolution research on English Wikipedia. Panelist will share current community experiences with dispute resolution, data on whats working well and what isn't, and how you can learn to become a better mediator to help resolve disputes.
  • Small Wiki Editor Engagement Project, a project experimenting and developing best practices for editor engagement and retention tailored to the specific needs of smaller-sized editing communities. Panelist will discuss the project's approach and activities underway on Bangla Wikipedia.

Come join us to learn what it is like to be a Fellow, what we've been learning from our projects, and how you can get involved!
