Introduction This project aims to the digital documentation of Tamil Nadu (India) government museums and archeological museums. In Tamil Nadu there is 20 numbers of Government museums and 15 numbers of archeological museums functioning in district head quarters. At present only on portal documented some exhibits. This project wish to digitalize all the exhibits available in government museums. History of Tamil Nadu museum The proposal for a museum in Madras was mooted by the Madras Literary Society in 1846 AD and Sir Henry Pottinger, the then Governor, obtained the sanction of the Court of Directors of the East India Company in London. In January 1851 AD, Dr. Edward Balfour, Medical Officer of the Governor's Body guard was appointed as the First Officer in charge of the Government Museum. The notification in the Fort St. George Gazetteer dated 29th April 1851 AD contained the first announcement regarding the opening of the Madras Government Museum. The Government Museum otherwise called as the Central Museum was started in the College of Fort St. George, in the premises of the present office of the Director of Public Instruction, on College Road. The college had been established in 1812 AD and made a significant contribution to the development of South Indian Languages. The Museum was started in the first floor of the college with the 1100 geological specimens of the Madras Literary Society. It steadily developed and expanded under the guidance and supervision of a succession of directors. Museums in Tamil Nadu At present government of tamil nadu functioning museums in district head quarters viz., government museum- Coimbatore, government museum-Cuddalore, government museum-Erode, government museum-Kanchipuram, government museum-Kanniyakumari, government museum- Karur, government museum-Krishnagiri, government museum- Madurai, government museum- Nagapattinam, government museum-Palani, government museum- Pudukkottai, government museum- Ramanathapuram, government museum- Salem, government museum- Sivaganga, government museum- Tirunelveli, government museum- Tiruvarur-government museum, Tiruchirappalli, government museum- Udagamandalam, government museum-Vellore, government museum- Virudhunagar Importance of Museum in Tamil Nadu Government Museums has thousands of artifact and antiquities, which stands as material evidences of the rich cultural heritage of South India in particular. Most of them are in display and some of them in reserve collection. In addition to that it also serves as a repository centre for keeping objects pertaining to the Art and History temporarily for items, which are under judicial process and items deposited by the Government. Objectives of the project 1. To digitalize all the museum exhibits in Tamil Nadu. 2. Publishing all the museum exhibits in Tamil Nadu via Wikipedia. 3.
